PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Never fight green beer or corned beef and cabbage, especially on St. Patrick's Day. Almost 30 people attended our monthly dinner meeting on March 17th at Stoneybrook. Unfortunately, about 200 other people were also there to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Our "meeting room" was full of revelers enjoying the beer and Irish food. Due to the enormity of the crowd, we decided that carrying forward with the planned program was an impossible task. Fortunately, FBPE Chairman Bob Matthews, PE, our gracious speaker for the evening, has agreed to return for a future meeting, probably in early fall. On the plus side, several of our members had the opportunity to speak with Bob one on one regarding some of their professional concerns. Thanks, Bob, for being so gracious and we apologize for the inconvenience that you and any of our meeting attendees may have experienced due to the events of that evening. I'm sure our chapter meeting planners will take heed. "Don't fight the green beer or corned beef and cabbage."
April's monthly event, the Panther Island Mitigation Bank swamp buggy tour and barbeque, looks to be very interesting, informative and exciting. Tim Durham, PE from WilsonMiller will provide an overview of the development of the site to be followed by the tour and barbeque. Please note that there are inside facilities and rest rooms available at the Panther Island site, so don't let three hours or so in the boonies scare you off. And we really are encouraging family participation. See inside for details, directions and reservations.
We're already thinking about next year. We will need a new chapter treasurer and we are seeking nominations from the membership. Self nomination is allowed. We will also let you know next month about any openings on the Board of Directors and/or committee chairs. From my personal experience during the past four years, there is no better way to participate in FES and your profession than as an officer or committee chair of the Calusa Chapter. See inside for nomination information. Give it some serious thought.
As always, I'm looking forward to seeing many of you and your families at our Panther Island event on the 23rd. Please plan on joining us.
Walter F. Gilcher, PE
