PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Finally we’ve had a few weeks of not having a hurricane to worry about. Again our thoughts go out to those who are still dealing with the devastation of the recent hurricanes.
The weather was great on the morning of October 16th, however, when we held our 18th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament at Stonebridge Country Club. The tournament was a lot of fun, and was a big success. Fifteen foursomes were on hand for a great round of golf, lunch and prizes. Congratulations to the team sponsored by Vanasse Daylor who took first place. My thanks to all of the hole sponsors and those who came out to play. Thanks to you we were able to meet our fund raising goals for this event, and will once again be able to give scholarships to local students pursuing college degrees in engineering.
I would also like to extend my thanks to those of you who attended our October Dinner Meeting, to hear Stan Chrzanowski, PE, of Collier County, speak to us about the County’s coordination with FEMA to update the flood zone maps in Collier County. I apologize for the short notice for that meeting, and for it being so close to the meeting in September. Originally there was a Regional FES Meeting scheduled for October, in Punta Gorda. The hurricanes caused that meeting to be rescheduled to January. We were left with a short amount of time to schedule a local dinner meeting to take its place. My sincere thanks to Stan for agreeing to speak to us on very short notice.
The dinner meetings are critical to the success and growth of our chapter. I encourage those of you who do not attend regularly, or have not been in a while, to come to our next meeting, to socialize with your fellow engineers. Our next dinner meeting will be on November 11th, with Michael Bridges, CPM, FPEM, Deputy Director of the Division of Public Safety for Lee County. Michael is going to speak about the devastation that Lee County recently experienced with Hurricane Charley, the lessons learned, and what will be done to prepare for future hurricanes. Please contact David Romano, PE, to make your reservations today.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you in November.

FES’ future so bright we all need to wear shades. The future of FES is in the hands of the many college students studying engineering throughout Florida. These soon to be engineers will be chapter presidents, regional vice presidents, committee chairs, and future FES Board of Director members. Now is the time to encourage them to become active in the only professional organization for all engineering disciplines.
FES supports 10 student chapters throughout the state. Services include fostering an understanding and appreciation of professionalism in engineering to the students, helping plan and execute projects that increase participation by students, and provide guidance for officers. Membership at the college level helps students prepare to be leaders in their profession and community.
Chapters that currently have a student chapter in their area are asked to make contact with the student chapter officers. Encourage your members to attend a student chapter meeting. The students are continuously looking for the encouragement from engineers in the field and welcome your attendance.
Chapters that do not currently have a student chapter are welcomed to encourage a new chapter at their local community college, private college, or public university. The minimum requirement for beginning a student chapter is for the school to have a curriculum or curricula of at least two years duration designated as being preparatory for entrance into an ABET-accredited engineering or engineering technology program. A student chapter can begin with 10 students.
Listed below are the current FES Student Chapters. Please take a moment to visit their web pages and introduce yourself to them. They are the future of the Society.

MATHCOUNTS
After coming from a record year, MathCounts is quickly becoming a major event for the Calusa Chapter. This year FGCU is providing a ballroom for the contestants rather than individual rooms. The event is scheduled for February 12th and promises to be better than ever. The only reason this event won’t be the best in the state is if we don’t get volunteers to help. Please mark your calendars and call Roxanne Gause, PE at (239)768-0409 to sign up NOW.
|
Don’t forget in order to renew your PE license, Professional Engineers in Florida must earn a total of 8 PDH's during each renewal cycle. The current renewal cycle ends February 28, 2005. Here are the requirements:
4 PDHs of continuing education credit are required in each of two categories.
- The Laws and Rules that govern the practice of engineering in Florida.
61G15 – Florida Administrative Code Chapter 471 of the Florida Statutes
- Area(s) of Technical Practice
What is a PDH? 1 PDH = 50 minutes in the classroom.
