PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The FES 89th annual meeting at the Marco Island Marriot was quite a success this year, with the best attendance record to date. I was impressed with the number of Chapter Members that attended the meeting form other areas of the State. This was a great opportunity to talk to other chapter officers and members and discuss their efforts to recruit members, interact with local agencies and schools, schedule speakers and plan activities.
On Thursday evening, a reception was held for the incoming president, John Hall, PE which was hosted by Calusa Chapter. John greeted attendees as they came into the room and he made everyone feel welcome. The reception was low-key compared to the earlier reception in the exhibit hall and allowed members and their families time to relax and mingle with other guests. Allyson Swanson (FES member from Wilson Miller) did a great job getting this event organized and I want to thank her for all the time and effort she spent to make it happen.
The awards breakfast on Saturday was one of the best attended meetings during the convention and showed how much FES has accomplished in the past year. The Calusa Chapter received two awards for a large chapter; Best Membership and Best Retention of Members. Another key moment for the Calusa Chapter was the recognition of Kevin Higginson as a Fellow member. I think Kevin is the youngest Fellow in the Calusa Chapter, maybe the state. Kevin has been very active in the Calusa Chapter throughout his career. Several FES members, who were also ordained as Fellow members, took the oath for the Order of Engineers during the awards ceremony. This ceremony highlighted the dedication that many well recognized engineers have undertaken in their lives and the success they have achieved.
I want to take a moment to invite everyone in the Calusa Chapter to join in and support the FES Scholarship Program by participating in our Annual Golf tournament. Every year this event gets better and bigger thanks to the hard work of the chapter’s Ways & Means chairman, Dan Waters. Dan makes this event one of the best social gatherings of the year. This event is scheduled for October 15th at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Naples. Mark your calendars and please call or email Dan to get your spot reserved for the tournament.
Another event, coming September 15th is the FES dinner meeting, which will be held at The Strand in Naples. The September meeting will host Jim Mudd, Collier County Manager who will be speaking about Leadership and Service as an Engineer in the Public Sector. Please show your support to FES and Collier County by joining the Calusa Chapter for an evening at The Strand.

30th Annual Conference on Water Management
Co-sponsored by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the state’s five water management districts, the conference will provide a forum for state and local leaders to discuss the challenges facing water policy makers at the local, state, federal and international levels.
“As we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the conference, we can come together to learn from the past and build for the future,” said South Florida Water Management District Executive Director Carol Wehle, who will also serve as this year’s conference host. She replaces SFWMD Executive Director Henry Dean who retired June 1 after 30 years of public service to the state.
Invited guests include former Florida governors Bob Graham and Bob Martinez, as well as present Gov. Jeb Bush. Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen Castille is a scheduled speaker.
More than 400 people are expected to attend, including elected or appointed public officials, professionals involved in planning for local governments and those involved in water resource protection or allocation. Also attending are professional staff from Florida’s five water management districts and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, representatives from academia, and members of the business community.
A two-day series of panel discussions and break-out sessions on topics such as the history and future of water management, environmental restoration, water supply and technology in water management will be featured during the conference. Conference attendees can also choose among field trips to local areas of interest.
