PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Once again the Holiday Season is upon us and we are quickly approaching the end of another year. It has been a busy year for everyone and an economic forecast does not indicate that it will be any different over the next few years.

As you drive to the store to pick up gifts or commute to relatives and friends homes, you can see the affects of growth and hurricane recovery efforts throughout Southwest Florida . Local roadways are being widened and resurfaced, homes are being permitted and built at historical rates and regional developments are being zoned and constructed on the outskirts of our cities. New buildings are being built and old ones refitted with the latest in wind resistant windows, roofing and siding to comply with new building codes that are obviously effective.

On the transportation side of the forecast, Southwest Florida is the recipient of almost a billion dollars from the States' Transportation Bill that will bring needed improvements to Southwest Florida in the next five years. The expansion of Interstate 75 and a new Interstate Traffic Management System will bring a high-tech approach to relieving traffic congestion and improve disaster response. Port Manatee will be upgraded to a major port for Southwest Florida in expectation of the need for increased goods in our area.

With all of these improvements comes a price; the most obvious are the impacts on traffic during construction. The other impact can bring mental fatigue and hardship on those of us who permit, design and manage the projects. Stress can be overwhelming during the Holidays, so try to spend a few moments to enjoy your family, friends and community surroundings that often get neglected during busy times. We are all fortunate and blessed in one way or another and just like the hurricanes, this is just another cycle.

Happy Holidays.

David Romano , PE

Get More Bang for Your Marketing Buck!

How can you gain prime exposure for your firm all the while investing in the future of today's youth and tomorrow's professional engineers? Sign on to become a sponsor of the Florida MATHCOUNTS Competition, hosted by the Florida Engineering Society!

MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program that increases enthusiasm for and enhances achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States . The 6 th , 7 th and 8 th grade student competitors, Mathletes, are attracted to MATHCOUNTS because it provides them with an exciting and challenging forum for math achievement and rewards them for their accomplishments.

MATHCOUNTS attracts students with an interest in high-tech and engineering fields and builds math skills, promotes logical thinking and sharpens students' analytical abilities.

FICE firms such as Figg Engineering, Miller Legg Associates, PBS&J and WilsonMiller already support this worthwhile program, and you can too! To learn more about available MATHCOUNTS sponsorship opportunities, click here http://www.fleng.org/mathcounts/images/MCsponsorship-2006.ppt or contact Dee Kring, CMP, FES Director of Member Events at 850/224-7121 or dkring@fleng.org .

Calling All Volunteers!

We would like to invite you to judge at the Collier County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Your level of experience and expertise would be greatly valued and appreciated by myself and the students of Collier County . The opportunity for students to present to professionals from the community who are able to provide insightful suggestions and feedback is what makes this annual event such a wonderful learning experience for the young scientists of Collier County . The 2005-2006 Collier County Regional Science and Engineering Fair will be from 8:00 - 2:00 on Friday, January 27, 2006 at Rookery Bay .

To volunteer, contact Greg Anthony at Pine Ridge Middle School by e-mail at anthongr@collier.k12.fl.us or by cell phone at 292-8004 or by phone at school at 377-5000.

We look forward to the possibility of having you on our team of judges this year. Together, we can encourage student interest in science, engineering and education.

Thank you for your time,

Greg Anthony
