PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Where did the year go? It is hard to believe that this is my last President’s Message. It has been my great pleasure to be President this past year. Reflecting on the year I feel that our fund raising has been very successful. Based on the success of our Golf Tournament, and our corporate dinner sponsors, we are again able to award additional scholarships to graduating seniors who will be enrolling in an engineering program this fall at various universities. Mathcounts had it’s most successful year yet. These were two of our biggest goals for the year.

In spite of those successes, I feel that perhaps we fell short in attracting in one area, which was to attract more members to attend dinner meetings and to get involved in the operations of the local chapter. I feel optimistic in turning over the gavel to our new President, David Romano, PE, and that he will be able to find ways to encourage more attendance and participation.

In the engineering profession in Southwest Florida, I think that most engineers find it very difficult to find a balance between getting their heavy workload completed and finding time to spend with their families. At least this is true for me. Additionally, I also know that there are now numerous engineering societies that engineers have to choose from to direct their attendance and involvement. For me FES has, and will continue to be, the best society in which to come together with engineers from all disciplines, to socialize, develop relationships, and promote our profession. I am hoping that in this coming year more engineers will feel the same way, and make a point to come to the meetings and get involved with the Calusa Chapter of FES. I plan on staying involved with FES, and if there are any thoughts on how we could make FES an organization that you would like to be involved in, please let me, or any member of the Board of Directors know, and we will strive to provide that to you.

With that being said, on June 9th our dinner meeting will once again be at The Strand Clubhouse in North Naples. We will have the State FES President, Mark Mongeau, PE, join us and oversee the installation of the officers and directors for next year. This is an important meeting, and presents an opportunity for the members to meet their new Board of Directors for the Calusa Chapter. It is also an opportunity to network and see how you could become more involved in FES in the coming year.

As a parting note, I would like to thank the many individuals that participated this year and helped create the successes that we did have. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for all of their effort and hard work. I would like to thank Dan Waters, PE for his outstanding work in raising funds through the annual golf tournament. I would like to thank Roxanne Gause, PE, Elizabeth Fountain, PE, and Rebecca King, EI, for their hard work on Mathcounts. Lastly, I would like to recognize and offer a great thanks to Lucia Martin, who worked tirelessly to assist in all facets of our operations this past year.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at the June meeting.

Florida Engineering Foundation Auction

Dick Gassett, Chair, Florida Engineering Foundation has issued a plea regarding help in obtaining items for the Florida Engineering Foundation Auction in conjunction with the FES 89th Annual Summer Conference & Expo. He is requesting that chapter members be canvassed with the goal of obtaining at least one item with a minimum value of $100 for the auction. Dick asks, "How about getting a group of members together and offering to wash (and wax) someone's car x times in a year? How about painting a room in someone's house and providing the paint; a fishing trip, a golf outing, etc, whatever you might imagine.”

Examples of Items that the Foundation presently has are:

1. One week stay at John Hall's N.C. vacation home.
2. Two tickets to see the Orlando Magic.
3. Dinner for 8 cooked in your home by Ricardo Gassett.
4. Dinner for two with the Mongeaus @ Emerils in Orlando.
5. Round of golf for 4 with lunch @ Tomoka Oaks GC in Ormond Beach.

Dick states the Foundation has a good shot of raising over $100,000 this year, but the Summer Conference and Expo income must be maximized to do this.

For more information, you may email Dick at adme2002@msn.com
