PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
The beginning of summer is on us (that is what the 90 degree temperatures and 90 percent humidity means, right?). Summer always catches my attention, as both an engineer and a homeowner. As a civil engineer I always begin to think about how much rain the summer will bring, and the chance to see how the water management systems I have designed will perform. As a homeowner I am beginning to think about the upcoming hurricane season. Primarily I am kicking myself for not having storm shutters installed on my house after last year’s hurricane season. Hopefully we have all learned a lesson and are beginning to make lists of the things that we will need to avoid the rush, long lines and lack of availability of things like plywood, generators, canned goods and fresh water.
This spring has seen more of a social atmosphere for our monthly FES meetings. In April we held our monthly meeting at Gator Lanes in Fort Myers. We were eventually kicked out for being too rowdy. I am still not sure whether I am proud or concerned by that. My thanks go out to those of you who attended. A big thank you to Allyson Swanson for taking the time out of her busy schedule to coordinate that event for us.
The May meeting will be our annual spring outing. It’s time to head outdoors, eat some barbeque, take a buggy ride and check out Panther Island Mitigation Bank. Tim Durham, PE is once again going to talk to us about the design of Panther Island and how historical flows were re-established, and the benefit it has had on the environment. It’s a good chance to see what mitigation banking is all about. This is planned to be a family event, so please bring your spouse or significant other, and your children. Last year’s event was a lot of fun, so if you did not go last year, I hope that you will make a point of coming out on May 13th. More information on when the meeting is, along with directions, can be found inside this newsletter. I hope to see many of you there.
Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at the May meeting.
John English, PE
