PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Florida Engineering Society annual MATHCOUNTS event is coming upon us quickly and as usual it is becoming a major event. MATHCOUNTS is a motivating and rewarding national math coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. In Florida, participating middle schools compete individually or as part of a team in one of nineteen FES Chapters.

FES Chapters in turn send their winning teams and individuals to the state competition held in Orlando in March. "Mathletes" compete to advance to the Annual National Competition, typically held in May of each year. All Mathletes® must be in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, and have typically been coached for several months by their middle school within their daily curriculum and/or on personal time. Each competition includes both written and oral math testing on a very high level. The Florida Engineering Society (FES) is proud to have sponsored Florida's MATHCOUNTS since it's origination in 1983.

The Florida Engineering Society awards the top teams and individuals with trophies and scholarships at the state competition, and will send the top four on an all-expense-paid trip to participate in the national competition. This winning state team will also participate in two FES-sponsored retreats in preparation for the national event.

This February the Calusa Chapter is holding its MATHCOUNTS event at the Florida Gulf Coast University. We expect at least twenty schools to participate, bringing several hundred students from around the Region. This event is strictly run by VOLUNTEERS who help register students and their teams, proctor tests, score tests, and get participants to their correct location to take the test and someone to make food runs to pick up breakfast and lunch.

Generally, the same few people dedicate their time every year to help out, but since the event is getting so big it is going to take some extra effort this year.  I am asking that everyone look at your calendars and try to plan a few hours on Saturday, February 11 to help out. Please give me a call and let me know that FES can count on your support. This time, it won’t cost you a penny.  Dave Romano, PE can be reached at 239 985-1246.

Get More Bang for Your Marketing Buck!
How can you gain prime exposure for your firm all the while investing in the future of today’s youth and tomorrow’s professional engineers?  Sign on to become a sponsor of the Florida MATHCOUNTS Competition, hosted by the Florida Engineering Society!
MATHCOUNTS is a national math coaching and competition program that increases enthusiasm for and enhances achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade student competitors, Mathletes, are attracted to MATHCOUNTS because it provides them with an exciting and challenging forum for math achievement and rewards them for their accomplishments.
MATHCOUNTS attracts students with an interest in high-tech and engineering fields and builds math skills, promotes logical thinking and sharpens students’ analytical abilities.
FICE firms such as Figg Engineering, Miller Legg Associates, PBS&J and WilsonMiller already support this worthwhile program, and you can too!  To learn more about available MATHCOUNTS sponsorship opportunities, click here http://www.fleng.org/mathcounts/images/MCsponsorship-2006.ppt or contact Dee Kring, CMP, FES Director of Member Events at 850/224-7121 or dkring@fleng.org.

Calling All Volunteers!

The School District of Lee County needs engineers to volunteer for “career day” events at Lee County high schools and at the Technical and Career Education Center.  Your participation will enable students to find out about the various career opportunities available to them in engineering.  If interested, please contact:

Richard “Hoppy” Hoptar, Career Specialist
Technical and Career Education
Phone: (239) 334-6221
Email: RichardJH@lee.k12.fl.us

The School District of Collier County extends an invitation to FES members to tour the engineering and drafting academies located in several Collier high schools.  The academies serve as a transition to college or vocational careers related to engineering.  Partnering opportunities are also available to engineers to participate in advisory groups for each academy/program, offer mentoring assistance to teachers, provide “shadowing” opportunities to students, and developing a network of potential future employees.  If interested, please contact:

B.J. Lattanzi, Administrator
Career and Technical Education
Phone: (239) 377-0141
Email: LattanBJ@collier.k12.fl.us
